Birdwatching in Kenya
Kenya is world renowned for its amazing wildlife. Although famous for the lions of the Masai Mara, and the elephants of the Amboseli, Kenya also has some of the finest bird watching in Africa. Here we look at some of Kenya’s prime bird watching sites.
Grey Crowned Crane
The Aberdares and Mount Kenya National Park offer bamboo and highland forests, with the thick vegetation providing the prefect habitat for a multitude of birds. The Jackson’s Francolin, Olive Ibis and many species of sunbird are all regular features of these amazing parks.
The Masai Mara is famed for its rolling grasslands, which is home to a seemingly infinite range of wildlife. As well as the ‘big five’, the Mara is home to many interesting species of bird, including the incredible secretary bird and the amazing giant kingfisher.
Secretary Bird
The jewel of bird watching in Kenya is undoubtedly the Rift Valley lakes region. The alkaline Lake Nakuru often attracts flamingoes, pelicans, cormorants and terns. Lake Naivasha is a bird watcher’s paradise, with over 240 species of bird having been recorded in and around this beautiful freshwater lake.
