Around the World by Train – A global rail adventure
In 1873, when the French author Jules Verne published his classic story ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’, the notion of completing such a grand journey is so short a space of time was fanciful indeed.
In less than a century and a half since Phileas Fogg embarked upon his fictional adventure the real world has witnessed a revolution in passenger transport that has made round-the-world travel faster, easier and less expensive and provide access to awe-inspiring destinations that were previously inaccessible.
These days it’s often thought that round the world travel is solely for fit and active back packers, gap year students and career-breakers but the reality is that multi-continent holidays which take in some of the world’s most exotic, inspiring and unforgettable destinations are within the reach of every traveller. Nor does a long-haul adventure around the world automatically mean that comfort and relaxation have to be sacrificed. In fact it’s possible to enjoy the very best of the world’s natural, cultural and historical wonders travelling by train on an escorted rails journey, such as that provided by Great Rail Journeys.
On globe-trotting adventure that spans fifty-three days and the best of travel by rail, sea and air, a diverse itinerary somehow manages to pack in treasures ranging from Canada’s Rocky Mountains to the Grand Canyon, the Kremlin in Moscow and the Great Wall of China. Yet this and epic journey across Canada, Northern America, Asia and Europe also incorporates an abundance of free time for intrepid travellers to explore and discover their own unforgettable highlights and experiences as they traverse the world.
But the real beauty of taking an escorted round-the world rail tour is that all of the hard work – the travel planning and arrangements and the accommodation bookings – is taken care of in advance. In addition to an entirely worry-free trip of a lifetime, travelling in comfort and style, an additional bonus is the unique opportunity to experience some of the world’s most iconic rail travel including the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway and the luxurious Venice-Simplon Orient Express.
For the discerning modern-day traveller who yearns to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Alan Whicker, Alistair Cook or Michael Palin it’s reassuring to know that round the world travel is now only possible but can be achieved stylishly, comfortably and affordably too. And, unlike Phileas Fogg’s journey, any travel by hot air balloon is purely optional.
