Would you like to see Woolworths back on the High Street?
Woolworths could be making a resurgence to the Great British high street!
Woolworths had been due to celebrate its 100 anniversary when it called in administrators in 2008.
But we could soon see it back on our streets, as former brand director Tony Page revealed he has approached brand owner Shop Direct to buy the name back and take it on, nearly a decade after its humiliating collapse at the cost of 27,000 jobs.
Apparently, he would look to bring back the nostalgic store in a “similar format”, making sure to place the new branches at the “heart of the communities”.
He also believes a new version of Woolworths would have a shot at rivalling cheap online retailers like Amazon. “It is much easier to walk down the road than to order on Amazon,” he said.
Best known for its “pick ’n’ mix” sweets, there was quite the public outpouring of sorrow when the debt-laden chain – in a £400m hole at the end – finally closed its doors.
Badly balanced finances and equally poor management played their part in its demise, but the biggest problem faced by Woolies was that too few of those who mourned its departure ever darkened its doors.
A decade on, can Mr Page change that by reviving the name and format, focussing it on “neighbourhood stores” at the heart of communities rather than big out of town malls?
