What goes first – the milk or the tea?

It’s a classic conundrum: What goes first – the milk or the tea?

Both sides have passionate supporters.

Many argue tea should be poured first, allowing you to adjust the strength to your taste—whether you like it bold or more mellow.

But science has entered the chat. Researchers at Loughborough University found that adding milk second can cause uneven heating, which may affect the flavour and contribute to that unappealing film that sometimes forms on top. Their verdict? Milk should go in first to preserve the taste.

Still, not everyone agrees. The late Queen Elizabeth II reportedly preferred tea first at Buckingham Palace. George Orwell, in his famous 1946 essay, also declared that tea first was the proper way. Yet others claim milk-first is gentler on delicate china, reducing the risk of cracking.

So, where do you stand? Milk or tea first? Cast your vote and share your tea tales in the comments below!
