Do younger generations face bigger challenges than Baby Boomers?
Much is made of the differences between generations and Baby Boomers are often pitched against Millennials in mainstream news coverage.
Millennials are coming of age at an interesting time in history; the rise of technology and the use of the internet has disrupted the way we live and work in unimaginable ways.
An increasingly global society, high tuition fees, rising house prices, a volatile economy and stagnating wages mean many Millennials are finding it difficult or impossible to begin adulthood in the same way their parents did.
Add to that a shifting values system – society has become more secular, many people are choosing to get married later or not at all, and put off having children or choose to go child-free – means that a lifestyle that would have seemed radical just a generation ago now seems commonplace.
Looking back though, Baby Boomers had their own set of challenges. Enormous social change was taking place, strikes and unemployment were rife, high interest rates made purchasing a home very expensive.
Many Baby Boomers had to fight hard to break from tradition and live the lives they wanted and didn’t have the benefit of advanced technology to help them take advantage of new opportunities.
Today we’re asking you – do you think younger generations face bigger challenges than the Baby Boomers did at the same point in their lives? Given the choice, would you choose to enter adulthood when you did or would you like to be of the Millennial generation? Share your thoughts with us in today’s Speakers Corner.
