As more emphasis is placed on climate change, governments are coming under pressure to reduce carbon emissions.

The 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales is an immovable deadline, Cabinet Minister Michael Gove has insisted after Rishi Sunak cast doubt on the policy.

The Housing Secretary warned costly plans to tackle the climate crisis could create a “backlash” as ministers come under pressure from the Tory right to relax existing pledges.

Amid cost-of-living pressures, the Prime Minister was considering watering down some net-zero policies to take a “proportionate and pragmatic” approach to the environment.

Britain has a unique opportunity to be completely carbon neutral in less than 30 years, but this will involve a number of changes, including saying goodbye to diesel and petrol cars.

To meet these ambitious targets electric cars will need to be a reality for all car-owning households in the next two decades; by 2030 the government is set to insist that all new cars purchased are electric.

While electric vehicles become more affordable and reliable each year, and better infrastructure exists to help with charging, many people are still reluctant to make the jump to electric.

For some, the cost is too high, for others they need to travel longer distances than an electric car will allow. Some people simply feel more comfortable with a traditional petrol car.
