Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad - 1900
Watch this postI am reading at present a classic novel that I have in the bookcase for some time--Joseph Conrad's "Lord Jim"- concerning life on the sea and the main character's failure to deal properly with life and death decisions on board an old steamer carrying pilgrims to Mecca.
Jim fails morally when called upon but I have to ask would we make the same decision? Jim, the son of a vicar is to be questioned in court.
The first chapters are the most lyrical, poetic and artistic I have read in English and Conrad was Polish. Conrad had himself served on the sea for 20yrs.

I was just browsing through and saw your post on Lord Jim. I too found that book a hauntingly beautiful read. It was about the only book I had when I was teaching English in Macedonia in the 70’s. I began to write letters home in the style of Conrad. I must of read those first few chapters 10 times.
A few years later I was able to work in Singapore and visited Indonesia several times which again reminded me of Conrad’s book. I think I have carried his written images my whole life.
Then, blow me, you are another w8man!

As anyone else had this problem ??. I have read other books by Dickens and managed them in one go.
As for Shakespeare, well that's anther kettle of fish.
