Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Hello Silver Surfers.

I joined last year but not used to the site yet.

I am 59 and unemployed for over 4 years .My husband works long hours.

I left school with no qualifications due to the death of a parent but this was never an issue in the past. My CV has huge gaps in it due to unemployment and child care and I am unable to obtain any references.. I have applied for for numerous jobs but agencies will not take me on their books. I simply cannot find work and have over 6 years until retirement.

I spend hours alone in the house with no one to see or talk to.. Most of my friends are either working or retired but busy with commitments such as looking after grand children or plain "busy" (some are rude and criticise me whenever I phone them and never phone me)
Hopefully I will find work and get out more when I get free travel at 60.
I would love to find silver surfers in the same position to keep in touch with.
Response from Denys1954 made on 29th Jan 2017 07:10:11
Hi Mauritius and welcome. I am sorry to hear about your work problems It will depend on where you live on whether you will get free travel when you are 60 or not, where I am you have to be over retirement age. What sort of work are you looking for?

Hi Heather, I've just joined too, so just feeling my way around too.
Your the same age as me, but a lot fitter than me as I'm suffering from an arthritic hip at the moment, but still got a very good messaging finger, so looking forward to chatting about anything under the sun really , so bring it on !!!!
Response from Heather04 made on 27th Jan 2017 20:27:03
Hello silver lining thank you so much for your message dated Nov 2016 ! As you can see I'm not very good at this new world of technology but I will keep trying ,I'm sorry you suffer with arthritis I know from other friends how painful it is ,in fact one lady I know has just on Wednesday had an hip operation and they have her up walking already which to me is amazing ,I just feel as if I drew the lucky straw as far as health matters go although I have had a few issues including breast cancer but thankfully most have been resolved with fantastic treatment I will never ever knock our health service ,I always say we are the lucky generation where we have been given everything I feel sorry for our future generations what will they have ? Here I am getting on my soapbox now ,hopefully I can find my way back to you .

Just retired from my business as an Electrician. After being made redundant at 63 I wasn't prepared to sign on so I went back to college to regain my electrical qualifications. Then started my own business now 69 so did a few years. We also moved to a new part of the country then proceeded to extend the house, a real sucker for punishment. Now we go for walks, sit around doing our hobbies and generally enjoy ourselves. Well that is me or should I say us as my wife is looking over my shoulder.

Hi Beachguy, I can't answer for anyone else but myself, I have joined silver surfers to make new friends, even chatting online makes you feel less alone, it also makes you realise just how many people are out there alone in the world, I think most of us just want some company even if it's only online company.
Response from sal t made on 23rd Jan 2017 10:44:26
Hi Beachguy I'm also on this site to make friends. I hope we can chat sometime. Sal

Just joined this site after reading about in an article. Now I notice most folks posting live in England. I live in the USA. Is this site primarily English? Otherwise, I am 55 and still working. I enjoy a variety of activities but will hold off until I understand better if I this makes sense.

Hi John, I just joined the other day and I too live in the US, North Carolina. The site came up when I googled senior chat, so I dove right in and joined. I think all of us seniors have more or less the same issues going on in our lives no matter where we live. I am also learning how to navigate the site. As you can tell by my photo, it downloaded too large so I don't know how to fix that. There are probably many Americans here too.

Hi everyone on SS I have just joined and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Sal and I live in Northamptonshire, I am not retired, but 2 of us offer lasting power of attorney services and older persons protection after having problems with various family members. I got a little fed up with the inane comments on a lot of facebook so decided to join a more relevant group.
I look forward to making some friends

Hi Sal and welcome . Its a lot better than facebook as there seem to be mostly normal people here and not thousands of people having a rant as they do on facebook. My kids use FB all the time and I shudder with the language etc thats on there! Hope you enjoy meeting new friends here

I feel I must take the advice of a colleague who said to me this week, "if you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you've always got". So with those words ringing in my ear I am making my first "change" by making my very first post in a forum.

Hi everyone and look forward to chatting.

Hi everyone my name is Dave,i am retired after running my own business for quite a number of years.
I live very close to the seaside at Porthtowan which is located on the coast road between Perranporth and Portreath,i am very lucky because there are plenty of lovely views..
Around me there are plenty of beautiful walks and being on the North coast it is normally quite brisk and fresh..
It would be nice to meet other people on silversurfers who like taking a quiet stroll around the cliffs and get some nice fresh air ,,
So if you have any spare time you can get in touch,i will be pleased to hear from you..
my mail address is [email protected]

Hi
I've just joined. I was widowed almost five years ago and promised my husband I would move to be nearer my daughter and her family which I did. I help with the school run and making dinner but the evenings are so so long and I don't sleep much. I have a few acquaintances but no real friends and get very down. Any advice?
Response from JohnHerb made on 19th Jan 2017 21:40:56
Hi Lanlivery, sorry to hear about your sad news. There are lots of very friendly people here on Silversurfers and I enjoy the banter and friendships

Hi Nice part of the world. I went to the Festival of Speed some years ago and we took an old Biplane that flew over Portsmouth on a lovely summers day. It was really interesting. I love taking the ferries over to the IOW especially on hot summer days. Welcome to Silversurfers its a nice place to meet others

Happy new year to one and all.

New here - 57 and and have taken early retirement. Have moved around a bit over the years as I am originally from the Isle of Wight, but used to work in London and we now live in West Yorkshire so our friends are scattered around the country.

I am happily married - my husband still works.

I am a cheerful and uncomplicated soul so happy to chat away. My interests are cooking, good food, history, industrial archaeology, literature and walks in the Dales and the Lake District.. I also love drinking real ale - particularly from Northern breweries.
