JAZZ ... Who is your favourite Jazz musician ?

It is hard to pick just one favourite as I love so many but in terms of who I play the most it has to be Dave Brubeck with Jan Garberek coming in second place ... followed by Stan Getz and Art Pepper. Would love to hear from other jazz lovers ...

I love the Big Bands. I grew up going to see the great Ted Heath band but then I did National Service and a chap in our billet came back with a record player and some Dutch Swing College recordings and I was blown away. So I still love the Big Bands, The Basie lot are my favourites but I also love New Orleans style jazz. I have met Max Collie on many occasions and they were a superb band as was the late Chris Barber's band. I have an eclectic CD collection from Brubeck to Basie to Oscar Peterson to Ella but I don't go a lot on the modernists, just do not understand what they are trying to do. BUT there are a couple of Miles Davis tunes I like. AND have you heard the band that Eric Clapton and Wynton Marsalis got together, their version of "Ice Cream" will blow yer socks off! I've been lucky enough to meet Digby Fairweather and the great Humph a time or two and find Jazz is a great way to meet nice people and I have a huge admiration for all those musicians who can stand up and play for 2 or 3 hours without a note in front of them, sometimes with musos they have never played with before. I don't where I would be without jazz and fortunately my wife likes it too, BUT NOT TOO LOUD !!

Yes indeedy.....

I know your.moniker from somewhere and I am thinking it may be from your posts on "Showcase Photos" that I even think I might've even upvoted.
Hey where's my upvote for Bessie Smith then? ( Or maybe you don't like the song?)

Are you the very same person who posted 4 Harley Davidsons and I asked if you'd stumbled upon a 'rotivator' convention? Do say yes?

Hi,

I did post the Harley D photos, taken when I was in Kelso last year. I have been on showcase photos and post to Silversurfers regularly. I do like the Bessie smith Song and have given the thumbs up for your posting, regards, Tony

Oh yes I know you now, also as he shreddies guy from this morning. I like to see something different on the Showcase. You split a grape also?

The 'rotivators' ...
not.very good at 'twisties',
are like sitting in an armchair AND you can steady yourself with your foot if you think you are going too fast! ....and I defy any H.D rider to tell me otherwise!!!

I have been to Kelso. ...in the 1980:s (I had a friend there) Beautiful surrounding countryside.

Nice 'speaking' with you.
I'll catch you again, no doubt!

One of my favourites

https://youtu.be/DOaZ37tO3uo

This is from 1933 and I came across it 9 years ago in a small music shop in Haverfordwest at the top of a steep hill, near Goat Street. I was talking to the proprietor about a Frank.Zappa postcard pinned on his.pinboard...as you do ....but I digress...I came out of the shop that day with a collection of "Larkin's Jazz", within it was this....

"Down In the Dumps" - Bessie Smith

Enjoy! It's the bees knees!

More of a Jazz/fusion type. love Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays, chic Corea,. As far as ‘straight ahead’ stuff, Tineke Postma and Jody Proznick.

My dad was a trumpet player (nor famous) and my first husband a drummer (ditto) so I've been listening to jazz all my life. Have to say that all aspects of bop will just stop me in my tracks to murmur, "Yeah, preach." Like Greyson, I don't have just one favourite player - I think it's impossible to choose, as it means leaving other names unsaid! So many beautiful players out there -- and, sadly, one less now, as I've just heard that Lee Konitz has died of Covid-19. Sad, so sad. I'm going to put his version of Donna Lee on my CD player right this minute....

My parents brought me up listening Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman and Glenn Miller, so i like the big band swing style jazz, but i also like Miles Davis and Jamie Cullum as well as bands like Spirogyra.

Miles is certainly an education all by himself ...
