Advice for an over 60 job hunter?

At 60 years old, I still have a minimum of 6 years to work.

I am very unhappy in my current job and have applied for many other jobs with no success.

I believe that potential employers are not giving me a chance because of my age. I feel this is very short sighted of them as I can offer a great deal of experience and can be flexible as I no longer have to think of things like childcare.

Does anyone have any advice as to how or where I can find a job in administration where I will be judged on my capabilities and not my age?

I had a similar thing a few years back, the company I was working for literally wen't bust over night and we didn't see it coming. After a period of feeling sorry for my self, I registered for some temp work, and ended up gardening, warehouse work, moving bed sets in and out of a travel lodge, that nearly killed me, then a food factory sticking bar codes on packets of coffee, mind numbing, and finally a furniture factory, injury and accidents a daily occurrence

One day I got a call from a firm I knew from the previous job asking if I could cover some work for them ?

The answer was of course yes and I was then out and about again and seeing people and making contracts and with an idea and a few breaks and a blank sheet I set up my own business

This is / was the point, if you have what they call "transferrable skills". See if you can freelance ?

I'd never work of anyone else now, much as you crave getting paid at the end of the week or month, it works for me, I have a pretty good income from it, I know most of my clients personally and it's an excellent opportunity

Godd luck with it

This is an interesting topic for me, I am an educator looking to embark on a second career. Your comments have given me good information on how I may move forward in my quest. TFS

It might be an opportunity for you to work from your home doing something that makes you feel happy every day.The first thing is to consider all of the things you do which make you happy.Writing , Photography,Painting,All things dogs and animals,Sports, cooking ,Walking and visiting interesting places. Then think of something you could do as a business from home.See Jo Good ,Tony Interiors, Look whos coming to tea as only three examples on you tube of people of our age earning a wage doing something they really like doing. Most things can be done from home and in the future I think most things will be.Maybe you could create your own business typing from home or offer yourself for work in the leisure Industry ,ferry line or on a cruise ship ? Why not try something completly new that is less time consuming so you have time to explore other things.Take time ,be still and really think about what you really want to do with the next stage of your life .X

I’m in the same boat. Been driving for Lyft for extra cash and I’m now think of refreshing my resume and giving it temp agencies. Employers are desperately looking for employees because so many don’t want to return to work.

Has anyone had any experience getting employment through temp agencies?

Not easy Jill. Most companies will not hire people over 55. My son and daughter are both in HR and confirm this. Many will not look at anyone over 50. There appears to be two main reasons 1) they think that older people will not fit into a team 2) they have this idea that older people will have a lot of time off sick. To be honest number (2) is borne out by stats as people over 60 tend to get ill more than younger people. I myself had to give up work due to cancer and now cannot even get an interview.

The only thing I can suggest is that you try to identify companies who have an older work force (usually through word of mouth) and apply to them. Also some charities are much better at employing older staff than private companies. Keep trying as I I know a few people in their 60's who have found new jobs after looking for many months. Good Luck.
