Woodland Warriors
This poem inspired by The Woodland Trust Big Climate Fightback
Woodland Warriors
The next time you take a walk in the wood
Place your hands on the bark of a tree
Inside that rough crinkly crackly skin
Lies a tough warrior in the carbon army
In the battle raging against climate change
Our ultimate warriors are the trees
Woodlands, both new and centuries old
Are carbon capture and storage machines
Our woods and forests stand proudly tall
Absorbing carbon from the atmosphere
Locking it away for generations
Keeping our air fresh, pure and clear
Trees are such a powerful weapon
In our fierce battle against pollution
Trees fight flooding and cool our cities
Play their part in the climate solution
Old trees stand tall for hundreds of years
Hollow, ridged, gnarly and bent
And keen young saplings, newly grown
Ready to start their carbon assent
NOW it’s time to restore our wildlife habitats
NOW it’s time to help woods win this fight
Plant trees, lots more trees with Woodland Trust
Become a climate change champion knight
When you next take that calming, quiet stroll
Through a silent forest or wild wood
Take time to rest your hand on a tree
And say thank you for its power of good
