When We Were Kids
When We Were Kids
When we were kids in the ’50s & ’60s
People were more social and friendly with the neighbours
They would take turns taking us kids to school
I’d love when it was Uncle Lesley’s turn
We’d all pile into the cab of his lorry
And we’d sing. When father pasted the parlour
Or my old mans a dustman
When walking home we’d wave and say hello
We knew all the people in our area
We’d build dens, play Cowboys and Indians
Yes I had my gun, caps and holster
In the summer we’d be down at Rousse
The usual crowd were there
We’d watch the fishermen land there catch on the pier
Then we’d all go for a swim
Then go to the kiosk, Mrs Robilliard a lovely lady
But us kids used to play her up at times
But nothing bad, we’d ask for something we knew she didn’t have
Then sometimes Mum & Dad would bring our tea a picnic
Then have another swim before we went home
But the main thing was the community spirit
Our parents knew we were safe
Everyone looked out for one another
Hopefully when this virus has past
The world will be a happier more friendly place
And family’s will keep in touch more.
