When the Time Comes

Trying times.  D-day is now coming up to 76 years in the past and it struck me that present times are a bit like a second D-day for the nation. We are all in our landing craft (homes) waiting for the signal that it’s safe to venture out. Much as the troops must have felt as they waited for the green light to launch the invasion.

When the signal comes for us we will re-enter a world that has been decimated by an invisible enemy. We will only win the battle by denying the enemy the chance to multiply and wreak havoc on the population, so for a while at least we will have to tread softly, but, faint heart never won a war.

When the Time Comes

When the time comes, when the lockdown ends,
And we can go shopping and visit friends.
Remember D-DAY, nineteen forty four,
When the world fought back and won the war.

So when at last, as we first venture out,
Push aside fear and push aside doubt.
Think of those soldiers storming the beach,
The future they gave us, is not out of reach.

We’ve sacrificed work and we’ve sacrificed play.
People have died with each passing day.
Like the men in their landing craft, heading to war,
We’ll take the fight to the enemy, as we walk out the door.

We’ve had help from the hero’s who have got us this far,
Doctors and nurses, food delivered by car.
Plus all of the people, who’ve been doing their bit,
Risking their lives while we stay home and sit.

So when the time comes to step through the door,
Back to the life we all knew before.
It will be everyone’s D-DAY as we join in the fight,
To put this invisible enemy, to inglorious flight.

The coming battle to win the day, unlike any war we’ve known,
Won’t be won with rockets, bullets, or grenades thrown.
But with common sense and observing rules,
The lessons learnt, will be our tools.

Think of those men, as their boats tried to land,
Hearts in their mouths, as their boots hit the sand.
So when the time comes, to go out again,
Have courage, be brave, but don’t let the past be in vain.

If the science advises, do this, don’t do that,
Then stick to the guidelines, it’s not idle chat.
Nobody knows what the future will be,
But together we’ll win..the fight to be free.

Not a lot to tell...just an ordinary man...always loved writing but never had the time until now...hope I've got a few years left to write about the million things I would like to get down on paper be it in poetry form or just plain old story telling. Just in case anyone would like me to come along to their group and read a few of my poems live..I would be happy to do so within the confines of Kent or Sussex...I would just need to cover my time and petrol costs...plus a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just email [email protected] To answer some of your questions= ex-army..ex -jackeroo...ex-builder..ex-quite a few other things..still rocking...married...2 + 3 children...7 grandchildren...retired...love custard creams. I have now published my first collection of poems which are now available on Amazon under the title of..LAST APPLE ON THE TREE. The book consists of twenty seven poems covering a wide range of topics and emotions. My second book has just been published and is called A BREEZE IN THE WILLOWS, also available on Amazon. I hope that everyone will get as much enjoyment reading them, as I did writing them.
