To My Child

I saw the little strip of blue
and the tears on your mummy’s face,
then her beautiful smile shine through
as I danced around the place.

I watched you moving on the screen
and heard your tiny heart beat
I was so amazed because I’d seen
your little hands and feet.

I was right there by your mummy’s side
as they lay you on her breast
my heart so full and bursting with pride,
it felt too big for my chest.

I watched as those wobbly first steps you took,
and heard your very first word,
I smiled as you shouted, “Look mummy, look!”
You were laughing and chasing a bird.

I went with you to school for your very first day,
I saw you make a new friend,
you came home full of chatter with so much to say
as your first week had come to an end.

I caught your tears as you fell off your trike
while your mummy bathed your sore knee,
I cried as you rode all alone on your bike
saying, “daddy, I wish you could see.”

I’m right by your side as you’re being so brave
for you and your mummy each day,
I hear every word you say at my grave,
my child, I’ve been there all the way.
