The Visitor

The Visitor

I had a visitor today
He stepped straight through my front door
When I asked him who he was
He said we’d met before

He settled on my sofa
After pouring us some tea
I felt worried and afraid
Whoever could he be

He showed me lots of photographs
I saw a tear drop in his eye
I just couldn’t understand
I was baffled as to why

I watched him so intensely
And just every now and then
He reminded me of somebody
I once knew of way back when

His presence brought me comfort
But I just couldn’t understand
How this unfamiliar visitor
Would want to hold my hand

I grew tired as we were chatting
So, I had a little nap
But I awoke to find my husband
Sitting where the stranger sat

We looked at many photographs
Of our lives from yesteryear
As he held my hand so lovingly
We both shed a silent tear
