The Slippery Slope
Another thought provoking, reflective poem written by Martin Silvester … easy to identify with!
The Slippery Slope
My life has been quite busy,
And I’ve travelled far and wide.
But I confess I feel quite lonely now,
With no-one by my side.
No one to smile and take my hand,
No-one to say they care.
No-one to sit across the room,
In the other comfy chair.
No-one to miss when they go out,
No-one to discuss plans.
No-one to share a home cooked meal,
And help wash the pots and pans.
You never think of later years,
While youth is on your side.
In fact you’re glad of peace and quiet,
To break life’s hectic ride.
But when it gets to later years,
And your family’s flown the nest.
And you sit and look at your telephone,
Sitting silent in its rest.
Then you really need some company,
Oh how you wish someone would call,
The house seems very empty, with only..
Your coat, hanging in the hall.
Don’t let lonely win the day,
Find a friend who feels the same.
Don’t be afraid to socialise,
Feel part of things again.
There are loads of clubs, places to go,
Where people meet and chat,
If you feel you’ve got nothing to talk about,
Talk about this and that.
There’s trips out to the seaside,
There’s trips down to the town,
There’s dancing clubs and bingo halls,
Don’t let lonely get you down.
Invite friends round for a chat,
Or to play a game or two.
The hand of friendship you hold out,
Means they’ll invite you too.
You may well say…well who are you?
To write of things that hurt.
I’ve written this about myself,
And my very own T-shirt.
I told myself to get a grip,
Don’t just sit and mope.
Go back out into the world,
And get off lonely’s slippery slope.
So lonely you can take a hike,
I don’t want your lonely pain.
So I’m off out to meet new friends I’ve made,
And enjoy my life again.
