The River

Another very poignant poem from Martin Silvester for you to enjoy …

The River

Your lifetime is a river,
Flowing sweetly from the womb.
Your problems are like dark rocks,
That from the waters loom.

Just flow around the problems,
And glide upon your way.
Caress your friends and flood your foes,
As all life’s games you play.

A flowing river widens,
It becomes mature and wise,
Experience and wisdom,
Increase as it gains size.

Onwards, ever onwards,
Towards the distant sea.
You’ll gather others to you,
And produce a family tree.

Pain and sorrow, tears of joy
Are what life’s waiter serves.
But rain and sunshine intermixed,
Produce a rainbows curves.

And as the river nears the sea,
Approaching journey’s end.
Look at those around you,
And count them as a friend.

Look back upon your childhood,
Look back upon your life.
Look back upon your husband,
Look back upon your wife.

Look forward to the future,
Look forward to each day.
Look forward to the summertime,
You still have games to play.

Now don’t be too down hearted,
That you have to walk…not run.
Just close your eyes and travel back,
Take strength from things you’ve done.

Remember your first girlfriend?
Or indeed your beau?
Remember all the fast times?
Remember all the slow?

Your memories are your treasure,
And each day you’ll add some more.
Don’t be afraid to venture out,
Upon life’s crowded floor.

Sometime in the future,
Someone will want to know.
Just where your river came from,
Who it touched upon its flow.

Now here’s MY little secret,
Which you may,or may not heed,
I’ve put my life on paper,
For my loved ones all to read.

I wish, I wish, I wish I knew,
Just how my mum met dad.
But I never asked them anything,
I wish….I wish….I had.

Not a lot to tell...just an ordinary man...always loved writing but never had the time until now...hope I've got a few years left to write about the million things I would like to get down on paper be it in poetry form or just plain old story telling. Just in case anyone would like me to come along to their group and read a few of my poems live..I would be happy to do so within the confines of Kent or Sussex...I would just need to cover my time and petrol costs...plus a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just email [email protected] To answer some of your questions= ex-army..ex -jackeroo...ex-builder..ex-quite a few other things..still rocking...married...2 + 3 children...7 grandchildren...retired...love custard creams. I have now published my first collection of poems which are now available on Amazon under the title of..LAST APPLE ON THE TREE. The book consists of twenty seven poems covering a wide range of topics and emotions. My second book has just been published and is called A BREEZE IN THE WILLOWS, also available on Amazon. I hope that everyone will get as much enjoyment reading them, as I did writing them.
