The Queen’s Coronation
The Queen’s coronation 1953
I was only thirteen, when they crowned our Queen
Street parties were held everywhere.
But our family didn’t join in. we did our own thing
And went to my aunts, their television to share
It was 1953, we listened to wireless after tea.
Rented of course, but it was our only source.
Our cousin was posh, her Dad he had dosh,
She was an only child, three in our family of course.
Coronation day dawned, and we all complained
Cos the day was wet, but nevertheless,
So many people around, some jumping up and down
Watching our Queen, she looked small on the screen.
I ask dad why, I didn’t have a flag to fly
He said no money to spare, I said it wasn’t fair.
Yet it was fun, even if there was no sun.
Sitting on a hard chair, watching Telly was so rare.
It was the best, men also conquered Mount Everest
I got a mug from school also a spoon
Had a sandwich of ham, or it could have been spam
That day in June had passed too soon.
Finally dad he too, rented a television
Not long after the Queen’s coronation .
