The Pride of Lionesses

The Pride of Lionesses

I didn’t see a pound sign on the face of these at all.
I didn’t hear a grumble when they took a nasty fall,
Not too much a whinge of protest to the watchful referee,
I just witnessed pleasant football, that`s how it appeared to me.

I saw the lionesses play a game I once admired,
Saw a spirit rise among them as a nation was inspired,
I saw a pride, I had forgotten, rise again within my heart,
Felt a land was re-united, as each player played their part.

I saw honesty within them, with a sense of duty to enact,
With the purity and fairness of a team who formed a pact,
Play the game and play for England, I saw no selfishness that day,
Just the simple game of football, in a simple honest way.

Hold your head my lionesses see the pride you have instilled,
See the hope you have imparted, see the promise here fulfilled,
Yes, you played and played your hearts outplayed the game I once admired,
And I saw a spirit rise amongst us, as this nation was inspired.

Congratulations to you all. You have awakened a generation.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
