The Nowhere Gate

The Nowhere Gate

Today I came upon a gate
Sadly, leading nowhere
I know not how this became its fate
I only know it’s there.

Wildflower and grass now crowd its place
They dismay and hide it’s role
Did it serve thatched cottage and lace
With lovers embraced, soul to soul

A tangle of Ivy where gatepost stood
Paintwork peeling, just showing white
There beyond, a slender Monkshood
A garden forgotten, out of sight.

What memories does that little gate hold
A lifetime of secrets past.
All of those moments remain untold,
In the passage of time they’re cast.

Little gate to nowhere I’m leaving you now
A tinge of sadness as I depart,
Maybe one day you’ll again allow
New lovers, new life, a new start.
