The fallen

The fallen

Did you hear the bugle sounding, midst the silence of this day,
When we stood in our proud tribute in honour of our dead,
Did you feel the ‘last post’ chill your bone and carry you away,
To the battlefields of hope hiding deep inside your head.

Did you pause then to remember of these sacrifices made,
By these generations who have trod this path before,
Did you remember of their valour and the duty they displayed,
Did you hope their name will live forevermore?

Did you see a solemn nation standing proudly at the hour,
When the great bell sounded out its call,
With a sorrrow deep reflected in that blood red simple flower,
That signifies the homage of us all.

Did you hear the ‘rouse’ call out to you with sharp and strident tone,
That made your backbone stiffen deep inside,
Will you hold that strong proud feeling in your blood and in your bone,
When a nation held ‘the fallen’ in its pride.

Do you see an old flag blowing proudly on the mast,
That makes your body taller at its sight,
When you hold our strongest heroes, keep the thought of them to last,
Say a prayer and keep them with you, when you sleep peacefully tonight.

God bless
( Thankyou ) xx
Mick.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
