The Carer
This very touching poem is written by Mike Rose from the perspective of a carer.
The Carer
The carer does not ask for thanks or wealth
They are just trying to maintain their patient’s health
This could be anyone family or friend
All that is hoped it turns out right in the end
A carer’s hope is not always good news
If asked on this they could give their views
Looking after a loved one is not a chore
It just goes to show that you love them more
You try to help them by any means
Maybe the carer cooks and cleans
Goes up and down stairs numerous times a day
For this they do not ask for pay
Sometimes it can be a 24 hour duty
And for this this do not ask for booty
All they can do is just their best
Hoping they get some time to rest
Others may not see the carer’s need
One thing you will not hear is a carer plead
It is possible this duty could be for months or years
With not much help to allay that carer’s fears
Although this toil may be hard and cruel
And for that there is no hard fast rule
If that carer’s patient should pass away
What then happens to the carer’s day?
They may have had to care 24/7
Now they have all this spare time given
What now happens to this person’s life?
Especially as they have maybe lost their wife. (Son, daughter, mum, dad etc.)
