Tea with Edna
My aunt Edna was a well-built woman, tall and rounded. She was always welcoming and would offer you a cup of tea to enjoy at her large kitchen table. She had a great sense of humour and loved to gossip and giggle.
In my childhood, she was like a big sister to me. It was wartime and our house was occupied by several of the families’ women as their men were away serving in the services. As was the case then, only one woman was allowed to live full time in the house while the others had to work, contributing to the war effort in local industries. Edna told me once that she used to make detonators for bombs and mines in a factory down her road.
Tea with Edna
Laughter served aplenty,
With the tea she poured for all,
A dipped biscuit and a giggle,
Yarns abundant, some a trifle tall.
Welcome, do come in, sit down,
Will you have a cup of tea?
Then laughter and enjoyment,
Served to all completely free.
Side splitting conversation,
About life, and other plight,
But now,
There’s sadness in those tealeaves,
Aunt Edna died last night
