Tea in the War!

Tea in the War!

There’s bread and jam for tea son,
So don’t be home too late,
With just a little butter too,
To set beside your plate!

There are no cakes or jelly,
So be of little doubt,
The bread must fill your belly,
The rations have run out!

There may be sweets tomorrow,
We can always hope and pray,
The dawn may ease our sorrow,
And bring a brighter day!

But today enjoy your roaming,
And just do what you can,
But don’t you start a moaning,
Because tea is bread and jam!

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
