Sunflowers

Inspired by the incredibly brave Ukrainian lady who gave a Russian soldier sunflower seeds, that at least they might grow from the soil when he lies dead.

War is so tragic. Sunflowers, as I am sure most of us now know, are Ukraine’s national flower. They are a symbol of unity and much more, now.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers will grow again,
As many as the fallen men,
They will turn to face the sky,
Wherever the lost may lie
To feel the warmth of a new sun
Though the morning be a bitter one

Sunflowers will grow anew
For the women and the children, too
In summer breezes, they will dance
Heads bowed in remembrance
Nurturing each fruitful hour
For they are such a giving flower

Sunflowers, in their many rows
Will watch over the last repose
Like silent guardians, standing tall
Saying nothing, saying it all
Even when the world is grim
May their beauty never dim

For sunflowers will grow, again
As many as the fallen men

I am happily married with two grown up sons. I live in the Sirhowy Valley in South Wales. For health reasons I am no longer able to work. I am an independent author of dark, supernatural and horror fiction and under the pseudonym Lillian White I also write romance with an historical flavour. Unfortunately, my writing doesn't come close to earning me a living! But it is something I enjoy. I also enjoy taking photographs of nature, reading, swimming when I am able, being with my Cocker Spaniel Milo, family and friends.
