Shopping For A Conscience

Claire Baldry has shared with us another one of her poems, about Charity shops …

Shopping For A Conscience

I’m working on my conscience
With heaven as my aim,
So, when I meet Saint Peter,
I won’t feel too much shame

I’m working on my conscience,
Below is all the detail,
How I visit shops of charity,
Doing countless acts of retail

In our town we have so much choice,
I counted more than twenty,
And, as you step through each new door,
You reach a land of plenty

I search the rails for bargains
For clothes which will be finer,
For Radley bags, Armani shoes,
For items marked designer

In the deep dark corners
I explore the bric a brac
I seek out lost antiquities
A vase without a crack

Will I find some sparkling crystal
To pour in Dom Perignon?
Or Clarice Cliff, or Doulton?
Or an old Port Meirion?

So now I feel most worthy,
As I fund Care and Research,
I just hope God won’t notice
That it’s easier than Church
