Publish and be Damned
Publish and be Damned
I smile looking at my very first poem,
Those rushed words scribed in a frenzied storm,
Penned hastily as thoughts flowed from inside,
“Well done, well done”, my conscience cried.
Poor publisher, I see now what made him squirm,
Those thoughts all jumbled, and hard to discern,
False rhythm and poor meaning lodged throughout,
No praise for my first work was he able to shout.
Gave tactful comments. ”Go, chose words with care,
Off back to your thoughts, read, ponder and hear”.
Let words flow on paper, then pause, stop and rest,
For your first words most likely, won’t be your best.
‘Look!’ I’m now accomplished. Read this fine work,
Words far less jumbled. I’m no longer a Berk!
So listen you new boys, you’ll not do your best,
Till your words are on paper and you take a rest.
Don’t blame those who judge your newly penned lines,
They’ve had experience, which makes up their minds,
Just write what you feel is the truth down inside,
Then heed when folk help you and give you a guide.
If in the end, you still hold you’re the best,
Be brave, take action, put your words to the test,
Get someone to print them for others to read,
If nobody bothers, then you’ve wasted your screed.
