Pegasus Bridge

Pegasus Bridge

It began with silent gliders dropping swiftly from the skies,
Holding soldiers and their armoury inside,
Took the battle to the enemy and caught them by surprise,
Thus began the task of rebuilding Britain’s pride.

Swooping down to their position on the headland in the night,
Dipping sharply in the dark beyond the ridge,
Grenade and guts and sten guns used to stem the German might,
To create a free world`s foothold on that bridge.

Advancing to the enemy as deathly bullets flow,
No thought but victory was in their head,
For this was the beginning of the freedom that we know,
Built on the backs of a free world’s sacred dead.

The bridge we know as ‘Pegasus’ would signify intent,
To fight the way to Berlin ‘hand to hand’,
And to show the World, by deeds here, of what guts and glory meant,
By actions only heroes understand.

This noble day in history recalls to a free thinking mind,
When we arose again from bended knee,
And proudly sacrificed the life they had to leave a life behind,
So Britain,  and her future,  could be free.

‘God bless all those who fought for us so that we could
live our lives in freedom.  God bless those who took
part in Pegasus Bridge’
Mick.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
