Parents of the Bride

Parents of the Bride

We look on you so proudly, as the parents of the Bride,
Your Father standing strong and tall so happy at your side,
Your Mother in her bonnet, heart beating for the day,
As we all stand and witness, we are ‘Giving you away’.

This day of mixed emotion, a gathering of love,
Two lives with such devotion, that no – one can remove,
A proud day, and a sad one, our Daughter now full grown,
Will wed her man, and build for them, a loving, caring home.

Just as we did together, when we walked side by side,
Two lovers joined by golden bands, a Husband and a Bride,
And all that we encountered as we passed along life’s way,
We hope that you will meet the same each morning of each day.

We hope your life is filled with love, from morning until night,
And that you will eternally be filled with life’s delight,
Each time will bring its challenge, so as you pass along,
So meet, and overcome these, and let love grow ever strong.

Do not forget the feelings, that bring you standing here,
And let the hearts still beat as one as love grows, year by year,
We swell with pride, as side by side, we stand with you today,
Our hearts are bursting with our love, – as we, ‘Give you away!’.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
