Once Upon Our Christmas

Come mid November we trimmed the Yuletide trees
with treasured ornaments and cherished festive novelties
The fireplace was adorned with a beautiful Christmas wreath
candles placed along the mantel with our stockings hung underneath

Beloved carols played invoked happy memories
of winter nights and blazing fires watching holiday movies
Baked some shortbread cookies a cake and mincemeat pies
ordered a ham and turkey always served with traditional sides

Wrote our Christmas list and checked it once or twice
if anyone had been naughty none they were mostly very nice
Shopped with the whole family dressed up in holiday style
then treated to that favourite festive dinner available only for a while

Celebrated every Christmas Eve while the kids were tucked in tight
as they listened for sleigh bells ringing in the night
Pondered on the reason for the season as we knelt to pray
looking forward with excitement to another blessed Christmas Day
