O Christmas Tree

O Christmas Tree

It’s almost time to put up our Christmas tree
Which were popularized in Victorian England by the reigning monarchy
Its origins are varied as it often is in history
To its present significance to humanity

Associated with pagan traditions evergreen branches were used to decorate hearth and home
In celebration of the winter solstice and at the festival of Saturnalia in Ancient Rome
The leaf retention and colour in paganism symbolized eternal life and immortality
A concept of continuance which transitioned to Christianity

The Christmas tree became a symbol of Christ’s birth and nativity
The triangular shape representing the holy trinity
In celebration we adorn the tree with ornaments and coloured lights
Placing wrapped gifts underneath it to exchange to everyone’s delight

As we prepare once again for the Christmas season
Let us bow our heads and contemplate the miracle of the reason
