No More Sunsets
This very poignant poem was written by Robert Thomas … I’m sure many of us can relate to this …
No More Sunsets
No more sunsets, the fateful day had dawned,
For weeks I sensed that the time to say goodbye was close,
I knew that you were no longer eating or drinking as you once did,
That your tail wagged more slowly and your eyes had become dim,
And although you didn’t show your pain it was easy to see your discomfort,
As you walked so slowly with the children.
Surveying your Kingdom for one final time,
On that cold….. yet sunny day,
And I knew in my heart that the time was drawing near,
When you and I would no longer make new memories together,
And so I shook your paw for a final time and held you close,
Felt your warmth as I looked into your tired….but trusting eyes
And realised that the time had come to say goodbye…. my faithful friend.
With trembling heart I watched you go,
Hoping beyond hope that I was wrong and you would return,
Watching the children walk with you one more time,
Hearing their laughter and knew that your final act was that of love,
Giving joy and comfort to others when all you felt was pain,
Yet those amongst us, old enough to know, felt a hollowness deep inside,
Fully aware that our futures held no certainties….. that we might never meet again,
Would no longer share special moments together,
Or languish quietly in each others company, without demands,
Just a level of trust that you walked easily by my side in times of trouble,
Stood your ground when you sensed danger and protected all that you held dear,
Always without a thought for your own safety or a moment’s fear,
Shadowing the hand that fed you and returned a shared love,
Goodbye my friend,
Remember me as I will you,
In places that we knew,
It may help ease your pain,
But cannot release me from mine.
