Nit nurse day!

Nit nurse day!

‘Nit nurse day’, hiding away, wonder what she will find there,
Stand in the queue, nothing to do, wait till she looks in your hair,
All alone, staring at a comb, please don’t scratch your head,
She will see, it’ll be a flea, or at least a nit instead.

Oh! The shame you’re to blame, never washed your hair,
Soap was old, water cold, no shampoo to spare,
Looks in your ears, compounds your fears, sees the dirt inside,
Dirt on your neck, ‘oh! bloomin heck’, got nowhere to hide.

Got told off, stutter and cough, “Sorry miss”,  you say,
Out of the line, now feeling fine, playground now to play,
Nit nurse gone, all carry on, playing hide and seek,
What did she say? wash hair today? – I’ll do it once, – next week!

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
