Naked Gardening Day

Naked Gardening Day

I wanted to dangle me carrot,
On, ‘naked gardening day’,
I wanted to shake me shallots about,
But she threw the blighters away,
I was going to riddle me ‘taters’,
And I wasn’t concerned with the cost,
But I covered over me rhubarb,
In case there was a chance of a frost.

I watered me lettuce quite early,
I didn’t wear much at the time,
Just me boots and me cap and a fig leaf,
I thought it suited me quite fine,
The blackbirds were chirping and hunting,
(I think somewhere they spotted a worm),
When I gave a cough,  and me fig leaf shot off,
It gave a great cause for concern.

I’m covered in stings from the nettles,
And rashes from thistles and things,
Me bum has the sunburn from bending,
And everything dangles and swings,
The neighbours have drawn all the curtains,
And they have been shut all the day,
And my dear treats the stings, and the rash on me things,
(But she hopes that the swelling will stay!)

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
