My teacher, and my guide

My teacher, and my guide

You gave birth to me, nurtured me,
Sheltered me, and dried my tear.
You gave love to me, and honesty,
When I was full of fear.

You took care of me, tenderly,
As I grew and learned to live.
You fed me, washed and clothed me,
When there was naught to give.

You spoke to me, patiently,
In my teenage, ‘rebel’ days.
You steered my path, quietly,
Beyond those stormy ways.

You took pride in me, maternally,
As I grew in older age.
But God called you then, to eternity,
As time turned another page.

And now I sit, reflectively,
And I kiss your picture frame.
Your lifeblood here consecutively,
But life isn’t quite the same.

But although you’re gone, life carries on,
And I am filled with pride.
That you were mine, my precious Mom,
My teacher, – and my guide!

‘Goodnight God Bless Mom. Give Dad a kiss from me!
Your son,  Michael xxx’

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
