My Hubby Had To Try The Flume
I wrote this poem when my hubby was well into his seventies, but he still wanted to see if he could still do activities he did in his youth. He was so funny to watch and is chuffed with this poem.
My Hubby Had To Try The Flume
Today was the day for our weekly swim.
An aid keeping healthy hearts.
We duly completed the allotted lengths
With all the energy we could impart.
Then my hubby whispered in my ear.
He’d wanted to do something for years,
Take a turn on the flume like the youngsters do
And alleviate all of his fears.
I was quite shocked as he’s not so young
And the experience could make his pulse stop.
But off he went stumbling up the steps
Till he appeared in the queue at the top.
I could hardly watch as this aged swimmer
With quivering hands grasped the rail,
And as he lowered himself into the flume’s bucket
He had suddenly turned quite pale.
There was no turning back; he had to go on,
Then he remembered when he was a boy,
How he would propel himself with abandonment
On a jaunt that would fill him with joy.
So with a good hard push he launched himself
On a dark and tortuous ride.
As he flew down the chute shedding numerous years
He was flung about from side to side.
Onward he skimmed with a twist and a turn
On his back and his front and his head,
Till he was rudely spewed out all arms and legs
With a face both startled and red.
He lay there a while to regain some control
Then staggered giddily to his feet.
And with a great big grin he happily declared
It was an adventure he would not repeat.
