Mother Love
Mother Love
When I was a little girl
I’d wait for you to turn off my light,
There really was nothing better
Then your hug and kiss good night.
You’d read me a bedtime story
I’d always ask for another another
And you’d say yes ok then, just one more,
As I must go kiss your brother.
And then before you went downstairs
I’d yell, ‘Please Mum one more kiss!’
I’d throw my arms around you tight
Saying ‘Please stay here like this’
I remember your dressing table vividly
How you’d sit in front of the mirror
Applying pretty eye shadow shades
And a lipstick that would shimmer.
I’d clomp about in your high heeled courts
Dressing up in your earrings and pearls
those coveted shoes were so huge on me
Not meant for little girls
And then as I grew older
Those shoes no longer would fit
It was time to build my own life now
You said ‘You must just go for it!’
The Arts and theatre were calling
You didn’t discourage me at all
With cases packed all ready to leave
I headed off that September Fall
And though we both had tears
We tried so hard not to show it
‘Go on now darling its time to go
Youll be back before you know it!’
Over the years there have been many goodbyes
But coming home always brings such joy,
And now I’m a mother with my own family,
Three children, boy, girl, boy
And when they were little at bedtime
When I hugged and held them tight
I’d say this is what I did with my Mummy
Before she turned out the light….
