Memories

Memories

Toffee Apple, or Rhubarb Dab, Sherbert Liquorice Stick,
Gobstopper, or sucky fish, dab or suck, or lick,
Imps, Spangles, or Refreshers, Barley Sugar treat,
Which one of them did you enjoy, what was your favourite sweet?

Whip & top, or hopscotch,  skipping rope as well,
Marlies, hum dum, hide and seek, scrumping (but don’t tell!),
Climbing in the sand hole, Singing round the fire,
Which of these did you play out, which was your desire?

Footy, Cricket, Rugby, games we played all day,
Two jumpers, or a milk churn, that was our Wembley way,
This was how I spent my time when I was but a chap,
Nowadays, they do the same, – by downloading an app.

Riding on a trolley , or a sledge made from a chair,
Jumping in the privet hedge,  (if the owner wasn’t there),
Playing with a Bowler, running round the place,
Or stonking up the old brook, with a smile upon our face.

We all found our level, by doing what we did best,
We played our games with nature, and seldom did we rest,
From dawn till dusk for most days, it seemed that we were gone,
And didn’t we just love it? Don’t those memories linger on!

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
