Mam!

Mam!

“I’m going out to play Mam, I’m going to the park,
I don’t know how long I’ll stay Mam, but I’ll be home before it’s dark,
I’m going with my pals there, playing on the swings,
Soaring high above the bar, I feel like I have wings.

And then we may go walking, to see what we can see,
We will be poking in the hedgerows, or climbing up a tree,
We’ll have a game of football, just a kick around,
Or we might play conkers if we find some on the ground.

We won’t need much for tea Mam, some jam and bread will do,
Save the meat for Sunday Mam, we’ll have it in some stew,
We’ll have a feed of nature, an apple from the tree,
Or some of them fat blackberries, that’ll do for me.

I’m going for a walk Mam, you know I’m always near,
You can hear the song I sing to you, full of childish cheer,
I’ll not be far away Mam, playing in the park,
Yes, I’m going out to play Mam, – but I’ll be home before it’s dark! “.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
