Keeping up pretenses
Keeping up pretenses
I’m not going on holiday, my funds will not allow.
Tho’ I will fool the neighbours, just let me tell you how
Inform the milkman not to visit, put newspapers on hold
Close to the curtains, then next I will unfold
A deckchair placed in front of fire, warmth to apply fake tan
I wouldn’t get this luxury in a static caravan
Read through that great pile of books, I really do own lots
And pray that one or two of them will help me with my plots
Cos’ stories that I make up, should contain a bit of spice
Must be sure to learn my tales, run thro’ ’em once or twice
The problem is the photographs, I’ll be stuck if friends recall
That the pattern in the background matches paper on my wall
So I’ll stick up some murals, using towels to cover chairs
Dress up in bikini, then pose halfway upstairs
If I need to take some air, I will go at dead of night
Scuttle off with utmost speed returning before light
Hard to ignore the phone when ringing and the post when it piles high
Then if any ask ‘bout the folk I met, I’ll slowly wink my eye!
