Inshore Sweepers
Inshore Sweepers
They put to sea that fateful day,
In more or less the usual way,
Steaming ahead with all due care,
Danger below they knew not where.
Their task, to make the Sea-ways safe,
Mines laid deep all over the place.
Slowly plying back and fourth,
East and West, South and North.
Most times sweeping very well,
Odd trips though, were a living hell,
The sea at times a dead flat calm,
Often it sought to do them harm.
The day came which proved their worst,
There was a bang, a crash, a violent burst,
Poor crew, no time to say a prayer,
The ship has gone. Their very worst fear.
Some were saved by a lifeboat brave,
The rest are now deep in a watery grave.
