I survived

 I survived

I survived peashooters,
and playing conkers, with a string,
And flipping ‘Glassy marlies’,
On an icy day in spring.

I survived a ‘Doshing’,
In a ‘Stonked off’ brackish brook,
And eating campfire taters,
That me Mother didn’t cook.

I survived a trolley,
Made of string and old pram wheels,
And falling off at breakneck speed,
(Yes, I know just how that feels).

I survived by sledging,
In the Winter down a hill,
On broken chair back runners,
With fingers frozen still.

I survived, by climbing,
In sand holes or in trees,
With dirty hands and faces,
And bloodened spattered knees.

I survived by scrumping,
and scavenging for food,
Apples and damsons from the tree,
They all did me good.

I survived,  A CHILDHOOD,
A sweet and happy place,
And I look back how I survived,
With contentment,  on my face.
Mick.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
