I Lost my Friend

For my friend!

I Lost my Friend

Years ago, when we thought we’d never die
I joined the Navy, they taught me how to fly
Along the way I met a bloke; he was a friend for life
We laughed and drank and partied, before I took a wife.

Best man at our wedding, godparent to his child
Single life behind us, we stopped just being wild
We were settled now, bought a house and car
He was here and  I was there, best friends from afar.

One day he rang me up,  shook me to the core
He said that it was cancer, the stage was number four.
He fought and fought to beat the beast but all to no avail
He crossed the bar three weeks ago a loss beyond the pale.

We both went to his funeral, all his mates were there
His son stood up, spoke of him, through tears of loving care.
I have not said who this man was, but his name is Ray
The clock will tick, time will pass, I miss him every day
