Homeward Bound

We left Whistler and drove on 99 north to Lillooet
On a rainy Sunday morning everything looked cold and wet
The clouds hung low on the mountain peaks as we made the steep ascent
While a fast flowing river fed by run offs accompanied our descent

Hairpin bends hugged the mountainside at various elevations
Leading us towards our intended destination
We entered an expansive valley rich in farmland and livestock
With arid hillsides flanked by pines some growing along sheer rock

An alpine lake came into view as we headed towards Cache Creek
A wild fowl glided closely past us so colourful and sleek
We turned south towards Kamloops on our homeward trail
Paralleled a freight train as it rolled along the rail

Forward towards Sorrento Salmon Arm and Sicamous
Shuswap lakeside playgrounds for everyone to let loose
The weather remained inclement as we continued Alberta bound
We spied five elk busy foraging their noses to the ground

Our spirits quickly lifted as Banff came into view
Only over 100 kilometres left for us to do
We’d driven through the most spectacular scenery anyone could ever see
To the welcome sight of home our beautiful Calgary
