Happy Christmas everyone!!
Here’s a very festive poem written by Martin Silvester …
HAPPY CHRISTMAS….EVERYONE!!
It’s Christmas time, a special time, the end of another year,
A time to reflect on Christmas’s past, and be glad that we’re still here.
Memories of distant childhood, presents and paper chains,
Christmas cards with snowy scenes, Jack Frost on the window panes.
We often talk of the way that it was, in the early days of our life,
And our grown up children politely listen, as they sit with their husband or wife.
We talk of a time when we used to go out, with the front door just left on the latch,
And Kids played on the street, supremely content..with football..skipping..or catch.
We tell of the sweet shop..the grocers..the butchers..the cheery milkman who came,
The shops on the high street..with bells on their doors..who’s owners knew you by name.
Tin bath by the fire on a Sunday night, and afterwards..hot buttered toast,
No posh holidays but..what fun you had, on your day trips down to the coast.
The summers were longer, the winters were shorter, the air tasted sweet with each breath,
And the news that came on the radio..wasn’t ALL..about problems or death.
On the whole people managed to trundle along, most were content with their lot,
Happily managing the life they were living.. not moaning about things they’d not got.
We may not like..the way life is today, even children all have their own phone,
And many new things that we’ve all had to learn, have shifted our comfort zone.
Play in the woods, respect for others, a clout from the law, or your dad,
But those times have gone..and it’s Christmas again, a time to be merry…not sad.
Don’t expect the young ones to sit and agree, that your early years were much better,
Than the present time, with all that they’ve got, like using I-pads to send Santa a letter.
This is their time, and it’s all that they know, so you can talk till you’re long in the tooth,
One day in the future they’ll be telling THEIR kids…life was better when I was a youth.
So the memories we hold in our hearts at this time, are personal memories so dear,
And they always emerge with the decorations, at Christmas time every year.
We think of the people we used to know, past loves..past friends..past times,
We think of our parents so long ago, sitting reading us nursery rhymes.
Each years been a book of your very own life, each Christmas..a chapters end,
And the memories will come flooding back, with each Christmas card that you send.
The next chapter begins on New Year’s Day, so be glad of the life you have now,
And live in today..not yesterday..the young ones will show you how.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS…..EVERY ONE!
