From Spring to Autumn
From Spring to Autumn
We age, we mellow
As the perfume of Autumn invades our senses
The smell of bonfires and rotting wood,
Of pumpkin pie, a distant childhood
Leaves turn to yellow
As the sights of Autumn confront our eyes,
Newly discovered coats and hats,
Mud on boots, footprints on mats
We cook marshmallows
As the flavours of Autumn tempt our growing hunger,
Savour the taste of a chestnut roast,
Of crumbles and custard and warm buttered toast
Our arms tend to thicken
As the twinges of Autumn attack our limbs,
A shiver of cold, a booster injection,
A damp induced cough, the fear of infection
No longer in Spring, but an Autumn Chicken
As the sounds of the season wake the memories we cherish,
Crunching twigs underfoot, splashing puddles in boots,
Showers of whistling rockets, zips in waterproof suits
We age, we mellow
