For My Mum
I have such fond memories of my Mum, who struggled with dementia in her final years. I have written this poem in her memory.
I raise my eyes to heaven,
To say hello to Mum,
I don’t dwell on her absence,
‘Cause it tends to make me glum
I wasn’t always pleasant,
Sometimes I made her groan,
But she was always there for me,
A listener on the phone
When life brought me successes,
She was the one I told,
I shared my inner secrets,
Even when she grew so old
I recall she told the neighbours
When I got my first promotion,
I squirmed with such embarrassment
At her motherly devotion
Then, as her memory weakened,
She forgot the words I said,
But somewhere deep within her
I was still inside her head
I’ve started writing poems, Mum,
I thought you’d like to know,
I’m sure you would be pleased with me,
I think your pride would glow
This verse is just for you, Mum
At this Mothering Sunday time,
I can’t do flowers and chocolates,
So I’m sending you a rhyme
