Fireside daydreams

Fireside daydreams

Did you sit and stare from your hard-backed chair,
Into the glowing hot coal fire.
With the time to spare when you looked in there,
Could you see your hearts desire?
In the gleaming coal that did warm your soul,
Did you see the pictures there,
And did you sit and dream as you watched the scene,
That shimmered in the air?

Did you feel the heat as it warmed your feet,
While the pictures danced inside,
Did you see your fate in the black – lead grate,
That was your mothers shining pride,
Could you lose all time in this red-hot mine,
As you watched the picture move,
And did your heart keep pace with your mottled face,
And did you see your own true love?

Did you see the part that was once the heart,
Of a British housewife’s home,
Where the heat from our coal warmed your heart and soul,
And from where you could ever roam,
Where your time was spent and all content,
With your loved ones all around,
And the endless dream in the furnace gleam,
Forever could be found?

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
