Fallen Heroes
Fallen Heroes
Soldiers line the trenches
Waiting for the whistle to blow,
Saying their quiet prayers,
Before over the top they go.
Nerves stretched to the limit,
As they wait to go,
Will they see their homes again?
None of them seem to know.
A shrill blast can be heard,
And out pours their battle cry,
As they climb from safety,
Not knowing if they’ll live or die.
Bullets fly from the enemy,
Callously snatching a life,
Breaking the heart of a mother,
Making a widow of a wife.
Bodies litter the ground,
Broken, bleeding and in pain,
Never to see a new dawn,
Or to hold a loved one again.
The sacrifice that they gave,
Was to ensure a brighter tomorrow,
A world filled with hope,
And a place devoid of sorrow.
Ensure what they gave is not wasted,
Be helpful, caring and kind
A world where we come together,
Was the world that the fallen had in mind.
