Dunkirk – Little Ships
Little ships
Little ships with tow-ropes,
And a prayer that ‘this would work’,
Carried Britain’s prayers and hopes,
To the beaches of Dunkirk.
Stranded in the sand dune,
Slaughtered day by day,
But little ships sailed by the moon,
To carry some away.
Amid the battle’s slaughter,
Where men died on the shore,
And drowned among the water,
That mixed the blood and gore.
But little ships came sailing,
Bound together fore and aft,
And soldiers began hailing,
The heroes of these craft.
An enemy was flaunted,
And we side-stepped defeat,
And Britain, never daunted,
Turned once again to meet.
Turned once again the battle,
Turned once again the tide,
By little ships with tow-lines,
Who rescued Britain’s pride.
